Another epic doubles tournament (latest finish ever?) has been and gone, and despite our professionals’ best efforts Lucian Hand once again emerged the victor – this time paired with the ever improving and bouncy Stephen Grier.
It seemed they might be in trouble as early as the group stages as they lost their first match, but managed to squeeze through in second place. The quarter-final against Guy Mallinson and Clive Thurtell was another hair-raising 8/7 close shave, and their semi-final against Fred Everitt and our new treasurer (Richard Bibby) was no walkover.
The final saw the young pair matched against Clare Handford and Tony Rose who had played a clinical semi-final against Peter Mallen and Jane Milton (winning 8/2 with a 30 owe 40 handicap!). They were neck and neck for the first half of the final, but eventually the freshest pairs of legs managed to take the victory 8/5.
Thanks go as always to Vyv Gundry and John Fox for their wonderful catering!
